What are we learning?

This week students have been exploring different models of fractions including area models, number lines, and fractions of a set.  Next week, we will begin comparing fractions using visual models.

The learning targets are:

-Students need to understand that all fractions are the sum of unit fractions.  For example, 3/4 = 1/4 + 1/4 + 1/4.

-When comparing fractions, it is important for students to understand that comparisons need to be made from the same size whole.

-When comparing like numerators, students can reason about the size of the unit fraction.  For example, 2/3 > 2/6 because the unit fraction 1/3 is larger than 1/6.

-When comparing like denominators, students can reason about the number of equal size pieces.

Multiplication and Division Fluency Focus: Threes
The strategy we use to multiply by three is to double and add. If we were doing 3×5, we would double 5 to make 10 and add the last group of five for a total of 15.

In science, we are learning about the regions of Georgia: Appalachian Plateau, Blue Ridge Mountains, Ridge and Valley, Piedmont, and the Coastal Plains.  Students will learn about the types of plants and animals that can be found in each region.  Check out this link below to view details about each region.

What are we learning?

Students have been exploring fractions as we jump into our new unit.  They will have numerous experiences with a variety of fractions and ways they can be represented.  In third grade, our focus is on fractions with denominators of 2, 3, 4, 6, and 8.

Our fluency focus for the week is multiplying and dividing by nines.  The strategy we use is to multiply the other factor by 10 and subtract one group.  So 9 sevens is equal to 10 sevens – 1 seven or (10×7) – (1×7) = 70-7=63.  That could be shown in a model by representing 10 units of the other factor and crossing one out to show nine remaining.
